The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) in Ontario has reverted to its former and more familiar name—the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR). This change was prompted by adjustments made to the Executive Council of Ontario in June, during which several new ministries were created and existing ministry portfolios were realigned.

For many anglers, hunters, and outdoor enthusiasts in Ontario, the Ministry of Natural Resources is a name that resonates with tradition and familiarity. The ministry has long been the governing body responsible for the stewardship of Ontario’s natural resources, ensuring that forests, wildlife, and waterways are managed sustainably for future generations.

Graydon Smith will continue in his role as Minister of Natural Resources, overseeing the ministry’s core responsibilities, including wildlife conservation, fish and game management, land use planning, and natural resource protection. His leadership is expected to guide the ministry through this transition while maintaining its commitment to preserving Ontario’s vast natural landscapes.

While the name has changed, forestry remains an integral part of the ministry’s portfolio. However, in an effort to provide more focused attention on the forestry sector, Nolan Quinn, the Member of Provincial Parliament for Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry, has been appointed as the new Associate Minister of Forestry. In this role, Quinn will lead the efforts to oversee Ontario’s forest management and ensure the sustainable use of one of the province’s most valuable natural resources.

This reorganization marks a strategic shift in how Ontario’s government handles its natural resources, balancing the needs of conservation with those of industry and recreation. With dedicated leadership in place, the MNR is poised to continue its essential work of managing and protecting Ontario’s natural heritage.
