A North Bay area man has been fined $1,000 for an illegal moose hunt.

Jeff Gagne of Rutherglen was found guilty in absentia and fined $1,000 for illegally killing a bull moose during the closed season.

On October 9, 2012, Gagne shot and killed a bull moose in Lauder Township near Mattawa. The season for moose did not open until October 15 that year. Gagne produced a League of Indian Nations of North America membership card as his authority to kill the bull moose. The moose was seized and forfeited to the Crown.

Justice of the Peace Michel J. Moreau heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, North Bay, on August 19, 2015.
