The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority (SSMRCA) says it has already axed its only program that falls outside of its ‘core mandate’ as outlined by the Ontario government.
This news comes after Conservation Ontario says it was “stunned” by a letter circulated by the province Aug. 16, recommending that conservation authorities begin the process of ‘winding down’ any programs that would fall outside its core mandate.
The local conservation authority says that its newly-focused core mandate consists of programs related to risk of natural hazards such as flooding, drinking water source protection, and the conservation and management of conservation authority-owned lands.
