The Star’s view: Asian carp threat..

Asian Carp

When mayors from around the Great Lakes met in Windsor recently, it wasn’t surprising that the damage posed by Asian carp was front and centre on the agenda.

David Ullrich. executive director of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative, said the carp represent a “massive threat” — both environmentally and economically — if they make their way into the lakes system.

“It could dwarf everything in terms of damage they can do. There is a $7-billion commercial and recreational fishing industry at risk because of this.”

The carp — which reproduce quickly and can weigh up to 100 pounds — could literally starve off the food supply of native species such as perch and walleye. That would be devastating for important recreational and commercial fisheries, including those in the Windsor-Essex area.
