ALMAGUIN – Local hunters are one step closer to bagging a gobbler in their own backyard.

The Ministry of Natural Resources is officially looking for input on a proposal to bring the spring turkey-hunting season to four additional Wildlife Management Units (WMU)  this year. The proposed new WMUs are 42 in Sudbury District, 47 in North Bay and Parry Sound District and 49 and 50 also in Parry Sound District.

Roy Warriner, a member of the Commanda and Area Anglers and Hunters and a longtime hunter said he has been working for years to get this started.

“Now we’ve got this far and we need to have people put in their comments to the MNR. Pro and con as there are probably some people who don’t feel that needs to happen but everybody needs to have their say,” said Warriner.

Those interested in adding their voice have until March 24 to be a part of the official decision-making process. There are a number of ways to make a comment including online at www.ebr.gov.on.ca and searching registry number 012-0672.

The MNR said their goal is to create new economic benefits for the nearby communities.

Warriner believes that not only will the turkey hunt attract outside hunters into the area but also resident hunters will be able to stay nearby.
